When the vent hood is installed in recirculation mode, the air is picked up and passes through multiple filters including the charcoal filter that absorbs odors. The downdraft system was very quiet and efficient even at medium speed. It is also easy to clean after some heavy usage with filters that can cleaned with just soap water.

disappointing availability of parts

We purchased a Bosch cooktop and down draft vent in 2008. The up/down motion of the vent failed in about 2016, because the motor failed. It was replaced by a service tech, but in 2018 it failed again. This time I took it apart and throughly cleaned all the moving parts and the easily available surfaces of grease that had accumulated everywhere, the motor still worked when I reassembled it. It worked for another 2 years, but again the motor struggled and while it did not fail catastrophicaly, it was not useable. I was unable to disassemble it again because of health issues and left the vent up all the time for 5 years, unfortunately the cleaning women put it down and when I tried to raise it, it stopped about half-way. Another disassembly found that no power was reaching the transformer, so something in the electronics up by the switch failed and would not come back. Getting at this part of the vent is much more difficult than merely removing the vent and removing back panel. I surrender. Will have to remove the vent (yet again) and purchase a new one. I think the root cause of the failures is that the filters did not capture 100% of the grease (or close to it) and the grease that made past the filters then condensed on all the interior parts. Other that the yuck factor, that condensation on the screw drive acted more like glue that grease and overloaded the motor.

Bad installation, poor service, low performance

Downdraft installation seems like a good idea, but the 3rd party installed recommended by the dealer cut corners to reuse existing ducting and there was effectively no downdraft at all. After two more visits where I diagnosed their original errors, they achieved about 25-30% of the rated capacity, most likely because of excessive and successive bends in the ducts. The Bosch service person was not much help, only with extreme pressure did he manage to get sort of an answer out of Bosch, which was that these things don't really work very well after all. Sorry I bought this.

Excellent and elegant downdraft vent system

The Bosch Downdraft Vent replaced an older (30 year old) downdraft which could not be used since it was integral to the cooktop (controls on cooktop). However, the new Bosch is much better in that it rises much higher above the cooktop surface and captures more of the air, odors, smoke, etc. than our previous unit. also, we have opted to switch from the blower underneath to have an external blower which, of course, makes using this unit much quieter. It is more elegant to look at with controls very nicely mounted as part of the unit. Also, it was not as difficult to install as anticipated since we were not replacing the original granite countertop and there was minimal modifications needed for this installation including below where we aslo connected to previous exhaust venting to the outside. Mounting and installation of exterior blower was exceptionally easy, as well. PS I have tried to provide photos but it tells me there is problem despite size being correct and my link is to the file in a folder on my PC
