Awesome Tablet

Kinglear 3/26/2019

I originally purchased a regular Tab A and loved it. When My wife bought a Tab A with S-Pen I was amazed at the added functionality and convenience of having the pen. I use it in the construction field daily and it has proven to be both rugged and indespinsable to the business.

LCD Out 2 months after warranty

Tabletuseless 2/16/2019

I've always thought of Samsung as a quality product until just 2 months after the 1 year warrant the tablet is useless. I mainly use it as a larger version of a phone (social media, e-mail, movies, tv, app games, weather, etc.). 2 months after the year warranty was up the system crashed and the screen never came back on. A certified Samsung repair center said either the mother board or the LCD screen was gone and the cost to repair would exceed purchasing a new one. Since you can still hear notifications I figured that it wasn't the motherboard but the LCD Screen that had gone out. Samsung indicated that it's past the warranty and they could recommend a certified repair center (after I told them I had already been to one). Since we have lots of Samsung products I was surprised that this one (newest item) just lasted over a year compared to the others that have lasted for several years. I'm not one that buys things on a yearly basis and buy things because they will last a few years and don't have the means to replace things like this every year. I'm now left wondering if I should abandon Samsung products and switch to Apple. I had a company Apple iPad years ago that had been dropped, screen that was badly damaged (screen protector bought later that was keeping the screen from falling out) that lasted for years in that condition. As much as I'm not a fan of Apple at least their products are made to last. The latest update also no longer allows users to remove the balloon around the icons which looks ridiculous. Apps also need to be able to be used on the SD card since space can run out quickly just for the apps alone. Apps should be able to be put on an SD card to allow more use of the tablet.

Great for its price!

Adolfo 1/28/2019

I bought this product a year and a half ago. I use it everywhere more than my phone since I am a dual degree undergraduate student and I write all my notes on it and get all my books online to read them on this device so I use this all the time. It has given me no problems so far aside from the S-pen being defective the first week after I bought it but after Samsung replaced it for free it has worked marvelously. With the save battery function, you can have it on almost all day using it nonstop as long as you are not running high end software for a mobile device like lets say Injustice 2 I guess. This is not a product to buy if you want to be playing games though since it does not come with a lot of space for apps and the extra storage of sdd cards cannot be used for apps either. The best feature I like about this device is the button on the S pen which gives access immediately to a list of tools including cutting a screenshot and allows you to transfer the modified screenshot to another app, something I use to constantly when taking a picture and transferring to my notes, or when wanting to paste a page of an online book I want to add notes to. No other pen I have seen comes with this simple feature that have made my life so much easier.

Disappointing

Stretchalso 1/22/2019

If I would have known before I purchased what I know now I would not have purchased this A10.1. I own an older A10 and have liked it very much. Battery started to loose life so decided to buy a new one. Biggest complaint is the limitation on using the SD card. Granted you can still put most/all media on the SD card, but one of my primary uses was with documents. From the various blogs, etc. these restrictions on the use of the SD card is apparantly related to the current OA which on my tablet is Oreo. I have done a lot of online research and asked Samsung tech support (that another whole line of discussion) and there just doesn't appear to be any way to created folders/files on the SD card that I can store documents in.

Upgraded to Oreo this morning 2018

NoteFa 12/11/2018

I bought this when it first came out. I've been a big fan of the note line of phone for the spen, so I was excited when they finally released a budget version. I'll run through the cons real fast: 16 GB onboard storage (us version), so you have to manage the last couple of apps i put on it. LCD screen is a bit of a compromise for price, but it's a decent screen, with an alright viewing angle, that's never felt limited. Any issues I've had was the result of my damage to the tablet. The good: budget tablet with high precision stylus input far cheaper than other marketplace competition at the time of release (2016/11) and even to this day (2018/12), particularly for Android. For the equivalent today, if this wasn't still around I would point people to an iPad and buy the Apple pencil, but the combined price would still be twice as much. I cant stomach the purchase of $500+ for tablet or android in general since I know an i5 laptop should start to be reasonably on sale, and will have greater computing power, but for the $250 spent in 2016 there was and is no greater bug on the market at the price. The most amazing thing to me is almost nobody has heard about this tablet. This came out the year or exploding Note7's but still almost no review sites have ever touched it. I purchased this primarily to take notes in class on pdfs issued by the professor's. While I ultimately decided a 3rd party app provided more tools and convenience over Samsung apps, I still think there plenty of useful features for the money spent. The spen is a pretty great stylus line with an active stylus layer built into as a layer of the screen so it can't be added post purchase. I will warn some screen protectors may interfere with the stylus, so my screen now goes without protections, but it's been fine. As an active stylus, it's a very accurate pen, and while I'm not an artist, I let an artist friend use it and she drew some awesome things with it. It was kind of hard to get the tablet back from her as she got lost in the feature and apps. I put a 128 GB SD card in it for personal media, and since most music and video services allow for SD card downloads, I don't run out of space. For documents and productivity you can leverage cloud storage for improved storage flexibility and redundancy, so for normal document usage to you should experience issue with storage. Screen is fine for streaming video or internet browsing, although Chrome sometimes renders font poorly. 1080P is fine at this size for rending text without a notable screen door effect, and reduced power drain against a larger resolution. Battery life is pretty fantastic. I usually charge it once every other day or so. I've been able to stream Netflix all day from a full charge, and while it's lowbat the end of the day, if I needed more life the super power save mode can stretch the battery life several days, albeit at a very reduced workload. Cameras are not super high resolution like a flagship smartphone, but they're decent for the price. I don't really use them except maybe to scan documents. I've never had a tablet with a sim card, so that's not a feature I'd miss. I just use my phone as a hotspot when I need it on the go, otherwise I spend 90% of my time at home or work, so the WiFi is just fine. So for my use case, if I had the money I would have preferred something like a Surface product, there are features in One note on surface that are just fantastic, but for the price of a surface I could buy a higher spec'd laptop and this table for casual note taking. If I could just find a reasonable method to use this tablet as an external pc input/ display I'd be in mobile productivity heaven, but as it is, it's still fantastic to pull out a tablet for meetings/class notes and stay engaged in the conversation in a way that a laptop can't.

Great Price

nzz426 12/8/2018

I truly appreciated the price however, I had to contact customer service on numerous times before typing a letter to the President of the company in order to receive the s pen that was missing with my tablet. I've yet to use the product because I'm still attempting to purchase a shock resistant case or something sturdy given this is for my teen that likes to draw. Honestly, it shouldn't be this difficult to find a screen protector and sturdy case. It's as if everyone stopped making them and only the flimsy ones are available on the internet.

Durable reliable excellent

TDKai 11/11/2018

I had one of these for almost 4 years. And in that time i had dropped it numerous times. Once from the roof of my car onto solid concrete into a puddle face down, it didnt have a single crack or scratch on it. Save for the scuffs on the sides. It was the best thing i ever bought. it still goes to this day. Even though 90% of the screen isnt visible due to the LCD being cracked. Still. Great product. Definately will buy another one when i have the money.

I am an English teacher who has LOTS of essays to grade. This device is fantastic for easily marking on students' submitted papers, saving the comments, and returning them via e-mail. It has changed my life. Students prefer this method of feedback, and I don't dread grading so much. If you are a teacher, especially, YOU NEED THIS.

Great for drawing and digital illustration

Monkeydraws 8/31/2017

I didn't buy this tablet to draw on it. But once i had it i figured i'd give it a try. In a couple of weeks i had ditched my sketchbook and moved on to work only on the tablet. The screen is super responsive and the pen allows me to get into the details and zoom in in a way that pen and paper never will. Battery life is impressive, even after drawing and paining for hours it still has power. It does take a bit to charge once the battery is fully depleted but i can live with that. This tablet has never failed me, it has never slowed down and it has never had a glitch. It works great all the time. My Co-worker saw me drawing on it and decided to buy one for herself too. My only complaint is i wish it was slimmer and thinner. Seems a bit on the bulky side considering what's out there. Even like that i can still lay if flat on a table and draw with my full hand resting on it without problems, but for carrying around it would be nice to have something less heavy. Screen resolution is ok for what i do and to watch videos, it would be nice if it was a bit higher, but overall i think it's ok. I've owned probably 4 or 5 samsung tablets over the years and this is by far my favorite.

Has S Pen and 4G / LTE, BUT...

Luv2Scribble 8/2/2017

I was very happy to find a good tablet, from the Samsung stable - no less, with a S pen and 4G / LTE. Visions of all that was fantastic in Note 3,4 and 5 floated before my eyes... and alas that was all they were - visions. This tablet wonderful in other ways lacks the joy of Action memo! I am disappointed. The other features are good for sure but the included S pen is good for short term use only and best for a quick scribble - so the included features cannot be used for long and now quick and purely convenient features, are missing. Samsung please listen to your fans of the S Pen and upgrade the Notes app to include All the facilities / functions of S Notes in Note 5. Other points Pros less bloatware attractive pricing good screen Palm rejection works very well (Great! Thanks) S Pen can be used in most Apps which is super, for me at least, as I prefer it to a smudgy screen. Good aspect ratio (In nearly Golden proportions). using S pen in portrait mode is excellent especially in Word. Inclusion of MS Office is great. Battery life Excellent. Reasonably quick charging. Cons 16 GB is too little considering Nougat does not allow using micro SD card as internal memory and install Apps on it. Pre installed Apps that a user does not want or need, can not be uninstalled. Please allow these to be disabled atleast. The earphones provided are not suitable for all users, at least not for me. I prefer the old style. Charging cable could be longer. In conclusion, the tablet has great features, but in trying to compete with facilities provided by other manufactures, Unfortunately, some Unique and very desirable features of Samsung Notes have been dropped. Now, users of these missing features - ability to link a scribbled telephone number to the phone dialler or to contacts, a scribbled address to google maps and a scribbled email id to the action of sending an email may be few, but these are, to me, highly desirable in a device like this. Maybe its just me, but a device with S Pen and with these features too, will be difficult to beat!

Started off as an excellent product, then out of no where the screen is black but has audio and the touch screen. I'm very disappointed with the quality of the product considering it's been treat very good (in a case, never dropped) From someone who has sold Samsung products for 10 years, huge upsetting loss. Sending it for repair, hope Samsung does right and replaces the faulty unit, reviews show at other retailers similar issues within alike timing I had purchased this for my employee that sold your phones

Needs more internal memory

Domer99 7/23/2017

The s pen is a fantastic productivity tool and the tablet is pretty good overall. I use it heavily for taking notes at work. The main issue with this tablet is lack of internal storage. 16GB is not enough in 2017...with 6 or 7GB taken up by the system and preinstalled apps. The advertising claims that you can expand the storage with an SD card, but the reality is that many apps these days require that they be installed on internal storage. For example amazon prime video. If you want to download videos to watch offline, these cannot be saved to external storage. I had to load a patch developed by a user at XDA that enabled adoptable storage (Samsung has apparently disabled this android feature) to try to use the external card more. But found that many apps still required that they be installed on the limited internal storage even after this patch. So if you just want to load a few apps and feverishly track where each app is being installed and how much storage each takes up to make sure you protect the miniscule internal storage (what I'm doing now), this will work for you. Otherwise potentially hold out until Samsung comes out with one with more internal memory or comes up with a way to actually allow you to use the external storage card more.

NOW it is a fantastic tablet!

SamsungWalrus 7/7/2017

When I first purchased this tablet, it came with Android 6.x. The tablet had an immediate and persistent problem with random power losses. The most it ever ran was about a day, but mostly a LOT less - sometimes as little as a few minutes between shutdowns. I looked over the support forums and the only related problems I seemed to find all related to improper connections to the battery - loose or otherwise not fully seated connectors. Which meant I either had to void the warranty and attempt to re-seat the connectors myself, or send the tablet to Samsung and hope they would fix it under warranty. I chose to delay, mostly because I didn't want a broken tablet should it be damaged under my tender care or not be fixed at all by Samsung. In late June 2017, an update to Andoid 7.0 Nougat arrived and I installed it. The tablet has not powered off once in the former random mode. It powered down once when I let the battery run flat, and after a recharge and feeding it occasionally, it hasn't failed since. So Kudos to the Android developers that Nougat apparently fixed a resource or has improved handling of whatever abending app was killing the OS. As a result of the Nougat update, this is an excellent tablet! This tablet is quick to load from powered down condition. It sips power when sleeping (cover closed). The pen operation is smooth and usefully done (though I really haven't fully learned or used all its features yet). Video playback is smooth. Wireless sometimes has to be power-cycled to connect when a sleeping tablet is awakened. In short, this is a great tablet!

Switched from iPad Mini 3

TreyDrier 4/8/2017

This is a great upgrade from the iPad Mini 3 (retina display). Love the S Pen. No more fingerprints! I also strongly recommend the Samsung Book Cover. Takes a little getting used to but once you do you will really like it. Pros: 1. Perfect size 2. Expandable memory - I bought a 64Gb card for 21 bucks 3. Nice screen 4. 16:10 is great for videos 5. Fast 8 core chip 6. S Pen!! 7. Good speakers 8. Volume and sleep buttons much better than iPad 9. Solid battery life better than iPad Mini 3 Cons: 1. Samsung S Note app no longer converts writing to text (why remove features Samsung!) 2. Nice screen but could be a little brighter (especially when using outdoors I live in Florida) That about sums it up. Great value for the money.

One Poor Decision by Samsung!!

4Bama 3/30/2017

Nice product, BUT: This Tab A with S pen only has less than 10 available gig of space after the included software (which can not be removed). This feature in 6.0 is a must. But it is disabled by Samsung and can't be activated. So what you are left with is a decent tablet that can only have a few apps -Shared memory is not available. That is a POOR DECISION by Samsung!! I would think they have enough problems with their product reputation.

Funny shape

mhorton44 3/26/2017

Too long and skinny for my liking. Have ordered the new 9.7 inch S3 that should work better for me. My needs are travel support, drawing, Office, handwriting to text for business notes and music on the plane.

Great Device For Internet and Drawing

RobertFox 3/1/2017

Unfortunately as many lost out on the option of having a Samsung Galaxy Note 7, I tried out the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, but I realized that the S Pen made all the difference in the world. So, I opted to purchase an iPhone 7 Plus (which I'm okay with) and this Samsung Tablet. Pros: It has the Stylus, I love the S Pen. Crisp screen, many applications to draw with, and I can even hook it up to my iMac to draw with those programs if I so desire through another application. The included S Pen is great for on the go. Pressure sensor, palm rejection, all the features that you need are there except for I believe tilt which only the iPad Pro has. Fast processor, fast machine, up to 15 open applications. New Android OS works great, no need for apps that clear caches or Uninstall. Decent camera if needed for on the go. The best feature of this device is the wonderful battery, which lasts all day in almost all circumstances using it with any application. Standby time will last upwards of 3 plus days. Cons: I love the 4k Screen on my previous Samsung Galaxy Note 4 phone. That combined with the huge screen, battery, and stylus make it ideal. This does not have a High Quality screen, it is right on the boarder of pixelating while zooming in on drawing, and other applications. If you are power hungry, it could use an upgrade in the CPU and Memory, but that would be an expense to the battery. For I love to have multiple apps running and if you have 5 plus heavy applications it tends to slow down most noticeably on the Internet using a website such as eBay or Amazon. The included S Pen is in and of itself fine for 30 minutes or less. However, because it is square and skinny it starts to do a number on your hand, which is why I purchased the The Wacom Bamboo Smart Stylus for Samsung Galaxy Note (CS310UK), by the way works wonders and you can draw, write, or use as a mouse for hours. All that needs to be done is the S Pen needs to be ejected, that might be able to be corrected in the settings. The internal memory is a joke. From past Samsung Android devices, I have multiple paid applications that are would run 32-64GB. You can use an External Micro SD Card, which I have a 128GB one installed, however, there are many applications that will not save and work on the external. So, to wrap this thought up, there are many applications I have to sacrifice and not install, I have many applications on my external and I have to count MegaBytes, which sucks. But, the other features make it worth it. In future updates, I hope that the Future Tablets will have 32, 64, or larger internal storage. I'm sure Samsung makes money from the Google Play Store, so there are many Paid applications and many Applications I wish to purchase and use; missing out on a lot of money on advertisements, etc is my point. Conclusion: It is a beautiful machine. Lightweight, screen nice, bright, and crisp. Decent Power. Very good battery. Decent storage. Beautiful drawing design. And I don't even have a case for it, the back feels like a vinyl, which is great for holding. Note: This device does not have certain sensors that will not allow my electro magnetic field devices work, obviously this is the model without 4G, and you must get the Tablet that says With S Pen otherwise the Stylus won't work and you won't have the features you if you ever want to use one. Buy this to tide yourself over. I love it. Very nice machine to replace the Galaxy Note battery disaster.

ALMOST AS GOOD AS THE NOTE

AZWILDCAT 2/27/2017

I've been using the 2014 Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet since it was released (I also had the original Note 10.1 tablet.). I absolutely love this tab. Unfortunately it can no longer be updated. It's gone as far as it can go. So I've been waiting for the release of a newer version. Obviously, nothing happened. When I saw this A tablet, I figured it could be a good substitute for the Note since it has the one item that separates the Note from all other tablets.... the S Pen. I wouldn't think of buying a tab without it. I started reading everything I could find about this new tablet. I did a comparison of both tabs, the Note & A. The only thing I had trouble finding info on was the features of the new S Pen. Did it do more than the original? This was important. I read tons of reviews without any mention of the Pen. Why spend the extra money if you weren't interested in the Pen? Even Samsung's site makes no mention of the uses. I decided to buy one anyway since I wanted the latest OS and more speed. Well I'm very glad I did. Even though the A doesn't have the same screen quality as the Note, it still has great clarity. You get amazing colors & details when watching videos and playing games. And the 10" screen is just right for watching whatever while sitting on your lap. It runs extremely fast, especially if you have high speed Internet. I'm running about 225 Mbps. Searching on the Internet is awesome! It's instantaneous. Storage capacity is only 16GB, but you can install a MicroSD card up to 256GB. You can open 2 apps side-by-side. Even though this isn't a new feature, more apps are available. I do miss the side panel that's on the Note. It seems easier to get to other apps from there. The S Pen does do other things but I haven't played that much with it yet. One new thing It does is translations. I was reading a review written in French. I touched the Translate option and, voila! It immediately went to English after choosing the language. I've done many things with the Note's Pen which is why I love these devices. I've 'clipped' articles and then emailed or added them to my scrapbook. I've played games in newspapers writing answers on the screen. I've copied complete articles that are on different pages and shared or printed them. There is so much you can do with the S Pen. I did have to get used to the home, back & open apps buttons being on the side (I use tab in landscape mode) instead of the bottom. I thought I wouldn't like this, but I actually like it better since the tablet is usually on my lap. Now these buttons are on the side making them more accessible. Also I found that the open apps button is no longer used as a Menu key which I've been accustomed to. But the best thing about this tablet is its battery. I live on my tablet for most of the day & night. So it takes me through this time and partially through the next morning without having to charge it. Its battery saving ability is awesome! And this is without putting it in either powersaving mode while using it. I do put it in ultra powersaving mode when I'm done with it for the day. It uses little to no juice while in sleep or powersaving mode. I've never had any device run for a day without charging. I was dumbfounded when I realized how long this tablet lasted me. All-in-all, the Tab A 10.1 is a great device, but maybe a little bit pricey for some though it is a 10" model. I also bought one without the Pen for my husband. It does take some getting used to with a couple of features that are different. But I would totally recommend either one if you're looking for a new tablet.

S-pen is what I had hoped for

sixteenkats 2/6/2017

This is my 3rd Samsung tablet, and my first 10" tablet. I love the pen. It makes writing longer pieces (like this review) so much less frustrating. The display is beautiful, and I don't have any real complaints 1 month in. (Note that I'm using the S-pen for this review and have only had to correct two ''typos.")

Doesnb't match up to Galaxy Note 10.2

helplesschicago 2/4/2017

I guess I am still adjusting to this one from my Galaxy Note 10.2, which also had a pen. I do enjoy using it but dislike the fact that it takes to mobile sites, not full sites, especially for Amazon. Easy to read from. Easy to use. A light would be appreciated by the back button.

tmfreyer 1/28/2017

I've had the tab a10.1 with a pen for about a month now and I have used this tablet way more then I ever used my galaxy tab s2 9.7. Love the feel, quality, size, feature, everything it is. This tablet is hands down the best one I've owned.

Surprisingly nice

AMS59 1/28/2017

I got this to replace my old Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, which I loved. I was wanting something larger to make reading articles easier on my eyes. This tablet has by far exceeded my expectations. There are so many nice features, especially the new ones added to the S-Pen. The only complaint is the new Samsung Note app, it's too basic; the SNote app was better and had more features. So, on this tablet, my go-to note app is OneNote.

Compared it to my Note 10.1 (2014) and returned it

Alphmac 1/21/2017

The battery life in my old Note 10.1 is waning, and I wanted a new tablet with S Pen to replace it. I bought the Tab A and ran into the same limitation noted by another reviewer - Samsung has disabled the feature that allows one to combine SD card memory with the tablet memory, and Marshmallow makes it impossible to move applications to the SD card. My old Note has about 20 apps running from the SD card so I still have a little bit of room in its 16Gb base storage. The Tab A did not let me move any of those same apps to the SD card, so I had LESS available storage on the new tablet than on my old one. Bitterly disappointed, I returned it. Come on Samsung, let's see a worthy successor to the Note 10.1. This, unfortunately, ain't it.

Close to perfect, but confused.

CZLumen 1/18/2017

I can't stress enough how valuable the SPen is for on the go productivity and browsing. Quite simply this machine is reliable, great battery life, helpful and to be honest comfortable to work with. My only real complaint is how dumbed down the SNote went from my Note 5 to this.

Great Product

luvdarts14 1/13/2017

I've always loved Samsung products and really like this tablet! The one BIG drawback for me was that the home and back keys do not have a back light. I can't understand for the life of me why they wouldnt! I use my tablet in bed at night and find myself stumbling around with the SPen trying to find the back key. The tablet is a little heavy but other than those two things it's great! It's fast, has gorgeous color and is fun to use.

Love it but....

kbwhitt 1/8/2017

I wish an adapter was included with the tablet and a 5 foot cable instead of the 3 foot cable. I have a Samsung Note 5. I have had a Samsung Note 2 and I love the colors. Slight draw back, the adapters do get very warm at least once a month

For an artist

Rtone 1/2/2017

I owned a Galaxy Note 3 phone and loved the accuracy of the s-pen when using art apps. But, I wanted a larger screen so thought I'd look into a Note Tablet. My first disappointment was when I learned that Samsung dropped the Note line. I needed a tablet with a precision stylus so I looked into the Surface Pro line. I liked the Surface Pro 4 that I tried out, but I was looking for accuracy in the stylus which I felt needed work on the Surface Pro line. I then learned about the Galaxy Tab A with S-Pen. Àfter reading some reviews, I decided to order one. I've had it for a week now and absolutely love it. The s-Pen is spot on! It is very responsive. I only noticed a bit of lag when I worked on a large file with large brushes. So I believe, for the money, you can't go wrong buying this tablet.

Best Android tablet

Bimmerbag 12/30/2016

Great tablet, best tablet if you want one with a stylus. Only thing is I wish they were more popular! As I can't get a case for it. But I have used iPads, I recently purchased a Microsoft surface, and returned in to purchase this. And I am very happy and saved a lot of money! Best tablet purchase for me to date. Would recommend!

Could be a great tablet

NoAdoptableStorage 12/18/2016

Could be a great tablet but too many limitations. I bought this because I wanted an android tablet with Marshmallow installed. Marshmallow was the key because Android 6 has a feature that lets you use the external storage as internal storage. Since the Tab A with S pen only has less than 10 available gig of space after the included software (which can not be removed) is spoken for. This feature of 6.0 is a must. But it is disabled and can not be fixed. So what you are left with is a decent tablet that can only have a few apps - less than half of what a phone can have. Nowhere is this stated in the advertising.

Davemg 12/2/2016

Love my Galaxy tab. Bought this specifically to use one note and I couldn't be happier. It's not the same Screen Quality as an IPad , but it's also 1/3 of the price. Great Value. Highly recommend.

Great Tablet except for integration of Micro SD Card

Jscavuzz 11/27/2016

I purchased the Galaxay Tab A with Pen with an additional 128GB Micro SD Card. The TAB A formatted the micro sd card with no problem. It shows up as available. Android Marshmallow has a feature where the internal memory can be combined with the SD card to use all memory together. Samsung seems to have disabled this feather of the android operating system on the TAB A 10.1. It is impossible to move most Applications to the SD card making the extra memory useless for anything but data like songs, movies etc. My internal 16GB memory is full with apps and when I try to install an additional app the system does not install it automatically to the sd card. Yes, I can move some apps manually to the SD card but the process is very tedious. Only a few apps can be moved to the sd card.
